Sooner or later all photo amateurs take interest in the capturing of coins, flowers, insects and other tiny things. And it is a really good idea, because the close-ups delight us with absolutely another perception of usual objects. And I can explain why...
Our eyesight is not designed for very short distances. The human eye (without myopia) has a minimal distance for comfortable focusing at about 25-30 cm. Certainly, it’s possible to hold your view on the nearest subjects, but just for a short time and with effort. Otherwise you can get a loupe to resolve small details. Standard lenses for 35-mm cameras were also made for same distances and applying them for close-ups has needed additional equipment. Twenty years ago I was need to use special rings mounted between camera body and a lens. This construction was heavy and clumsy but I was able to capture butterflies and flowers to the stunning of my [girl-]friends. Sure, this solution was possible for SLR cameras only. In recent years due to achievements in technology and computer-aided design was created good and compact lenses for these purposes: they all have the word “macro” in the description.

Very short-focus lenses are mounted on such cameras are almost perfect for this purpose and implementing of “macro” feature needs almost no changes inside the camera and in the software. Now almost all digital cameras (excluding, may be, the very cheapest ones) able to take pictures on short distances.
