Some days ago the Flichr has announced new-fashioned feature. Now you can upload und share videos (up to 90 sec. long). This speciality becames many opinions in photoamateur's community.
This is a really big surprize: worldwide leader in photo sharing try to catch his piece of cake on growing market of private (and half-legal commercial) video sharing, where Youtube rules. First reaction of Flickr users was most negative. A discussion group "NO VIDEO ON FLICKR!!! " has more then 10000 members in two days! The "No Video" movement is being derided as a bunch of Luddites whining about moving pictures. The flickr corporate strategy is obviously a desperate short-term attempt by Yahoo to add value before an impending corporate take-over.
Adding video to flickr is a horrible move for the brand, for the long-term health of flickr, and for the user community. I strongly suggest hitting flickr management on this point. Let them know they are diluting the brand, are introducing "New Coke" at the expense of "Classic Coke" and endangering their personal stock options. Indeed, there are enough of services to share videos but not photos, but Flickr is interesting with his unique photography-oriented community. My personal opinion: video sharing for Flickr is a step to nothing. When you agree, you can take part and sign a petition Last update: 11-04-2008 08:44
